Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Dave McNally studied art at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. The splendor of the Grand Tetons drew him to Jackson, Wyoming where he now resides with his wife Francie. His paintings have been displayed in galleries there since 1980. Dave's love of the mountains has compelled him not only to paint them but, also to climb them.

In 1988 an important break came when he was invited to join the Wyoming Centennial Everest Expedition as expedition artist. For an aspiring artist/mountaineer it was a dream come true! He seized this opportunity, which was to be the beginning of many great adventures. Dave has returned to the Himalayas several times to participate in and lead major expeditions including: 1991 Gasherbrum II (26,390'), 1994 Shisha Pangma (26,450') 1995 Kangchenjunga (28,250'), 1997 Cho Oyu (26,902'). His climbing has taken him from the summit of Denali to the Bolivian Andes to Pakistan, Tibet, China and Nepal.

In 1998, Dave founded Mountain Odyssey Treks & Expeditions. Based in Jackson Hole, Dave returns to Nepal twice yearly to guide treks and expeditions. Each excursion brings him back to the easel with a renewed vision and enthusiasm.

Struggling to summit the world's highest peaks is not the only thing that draws Dave to the far corners of the earth. Each journey is a 'journey within', which produces a powerful emotional response that, for him, must be expressed through a brush. As an artist he is intrigued with the sights, sounds and smells of other cultures. From the Great Wall of China and the peaceful quiet of a Buddhist monastery to the smoky darkness of a Tibetan yak herders' tent and the crystal horizon at 8,000 meters, he has sought to capture the experience with paint.

Dave has logged many miles with painting supplies on his back, creating field studies during long and difficult approach marches, or on rest days at some distant base camp. After returning to the studio these field studies are used in conjunction with slides to create an exciting series of portraits and landscapes.
